John V. Garaffa is a partner in the Tampa Florida headquarters of Butler Weihmuller Katz Craig, a civil litigation firm with offices in six states devoted entirely to defense and insurance litigation. John has extensive experience with first and third party coverage analysis, construction defect litigation and cyber coverage and defense. He practices in the firm’s construction, coverage defense, and cyber losses departments.
John has written and spoken widely on the law underling coverage issues, first-party bad faith, punitive damages, discovery disputes, and on the application of state valued policy laws to property losses in Florida and other Gulf Coast states. He co-authored Chapter 42, Determining Coverage In Property Insurance Policies, in New Appleman on Insurance Law Library Edition and authored the chapter on business interruption and damage claims in The Comprehensive Guide to Lost Profits and Other Commercial Damages, Third Edition. John has served as the Chair of the Property Insurance Law General Committee within the Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section of the American Bar Association. He is admitted to practice law before the state courts of Minnesota and Florida, and before the United States District Courts for the Northern, Middle and Southern Districts of Florida as well a the United States Appeals Court for the Eleventh Circuit. John is a member of The Minnesota Bar, The Florida Bar, the American Bar Association and the Defense Research Institute. John received his Juris Doctor from the University of Minnesota, cum laude, in 1982 and his Master of Laws degree, with distinction, from Georgetown University in 1991.
