Session Description: Behavioral Healthcare and addiction treatment have long-tracked research and outcomes. A common difficulty for programs and researchers is to track and follow-up with clients post-discharge. A primary obstacle is that post-discharge follow-up is expensive and requires many person-hours to accomplish. However, new technology is being applied to patient follow-up and monitoring in many areas of medical and healthcare industries (Center for Connected Health, 2019) to address these obstacles. These approaches have been shown to improve care (Goodman, 2013; Simons, 2006; Cohen, 2018; Carlier, 2017). This presentation will review telehealth platforms and mobile apps (e.g. Outcometools, R2D2, Videra Health, etc.) that allow for automated post-discharge follow-up. Some approaches allow for patients to remotely (i.e. from anywhere) and asynchronously (i.e. at any time) check-in and follow-up post-discharge with video-based survey questions and assessments. Automated schedules and pre-loaded interviews mean that systems contact clients and administer video interviews and follow-ups on their own, without requiring unnecessary person-hours spent emailing, texting, and leaving voicemails. Meaningful video analytics then track progress, flag changes in symptoms, and can notify providers. These shorter and more frequent check-ins help programs and researchers understand how clients are progressing while not in treatment and drive better long-term outcomes.
