Session Description: This presentation will review the role of retraining the brain to achieve recovery from substance use disorder. Most learning happens in early years, concurrently with brain development. Behaviors stem from patterns of thought and beliefs that are founded in the early years of life and further re-enforced over time. How can we overcome these patterns which do not serve us and instead choose a new way of thinking that can lead to a new way of life? Several methods of brain retraining will be presented. Participants will be encouraged to join discussion and to try these methodologies as part of the presentation.

After this activity participants should be able to
Understand the importance of brain retraining in recovering from substance use disorder.
Review the role of neural pathways, learned behaviors, genetics, toxins and factors in development of substance use disorders.
Identify, discuss and experience some of the ways treatment can support retraining the brain.
