Session Description: With all of the rumors, myths and misinformation that exist about attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), it can be difficult to know what is fact and what is fiction. Is there a relationship between ADHD and substance use? If so, why does this correlation exist and what can be done to prevent substance use. ADHD has historically been a diagnosis shrouded with judgment and a devaluing of its existence, yet research has identified “externalizing” pathways seen in those with ADHD, used to describe individuals who engage in behaviors that are sensation seeking or risk taking which makes them more likely to try addictive substances. For those diagnosed with ADHD and who are impacted by substance use, analyzing best practices to help treat both diagnoses is essential. By understanding the way the brain works in ADHD, a better understanding of interventions can be explored to impact the nervous system and positively influence symptoms of ADHD. The training will navigate the vast research on building practical strategies and tools that can be implemented immediately in practice such exercise, movement, diet, and mindful practices. Interventions will be discussed to address the impact of the environment on ADHD as it pertains to treatment and support.
