Chief Risk Management Officer McNeil and Company Dryden, New York, United States
The legalization of cannabis products for medical and recreational purposes in several states across the country has posed a new dilemma for fire and EMS agencies. While these new laws have brought the topic to the surface, we really have been dealing with these same type of issues for years. Impaired firefighters from drugs, alcohol, sleep deprivation, mental and physical conditions and even aging, challenge the safety of our entire organization and community. In this session we will explore the concerns and offer possible solutions. “Fit For Duty” is a concept that addresses the condition of a firefighter and gives the officer tools to remove them from immediate harm and participation. We will discuss ”probable cause” and “reasonable suspicions” and how these concepts, along with proper documentation, can lay the groundwork for a successful outcome that is fair to all parties.
