There are a number of critical leadership responsibilities we have in organizations. This session covers two that I believe are both timely and relevant. They include leaving an organization and internal unity. Taken separately or together, they are significant for all involved. Throughout the volunteer and career fire and emergency services community, those in leadership positions are eventually faced with myriad decisions surrounding their departure from an organization...or in some cases...multiple organizations. And while the tradition of unity cannot be allowed to diminish over time, the challenge we have lies in navigating societal and political distractions that can push the people in our fire, rescue, and medical departments apart. Depending on outcomes, a principal leader leaving - and a new one taking the reins – or the efforts of members working to maintain a culture of unity – will positively or negatively impact our people, as well as internal and external service delivery. Whether volunteer or career, this session will provide guidance concerning both of these leadership challenges.
