Character is about the virtues/values/traits that make up who we are, and for the Fire Service it is vital part of leadership. When striving to make good decisions, we must first have/exercise good judgments based on the situations placed in front of us; minimizing negative consequences and maximizing positive ones. Yet to make good judgments we first need to know more about the elements that make up character as they directly affect judgement. Captured and orchestrated via research done by a Canadian university, these 11 elements make up one-third of an effective leadership framework.
Character in the Fire Service is a presentation - workshop that will delve into what makes up character and why it is so important. By looking at individuals (inside and outside of the fire service) who have exercised great character, and others who have not, the audience will identify what it takes for effective leadership. By focusing on three areas of interest: 1. Hire for the Person; Train for the Skill; 2. Character Based Leadership; and 3. Psychological Safe Environments the learner will understand the importance character plays in our judgment and its place for Fire Service Leadership.
