Michael Varney is the FirstNet Director of Field Operations responsible for FirstNet consultation efforts for the northeast states in FEMA Regions 1, 2 and 3. He joined FirstNet after serving for over 28 years in Information Technology and Public Safety Communications positions at the State of Connecticut where he most recently served as the Statewide Interoperability Coordinator and FirstNet State Point of Contact. In those roles he also served as the Chairman of the National Council of Statewide Interoperability Coordinators and as their representative on the FirstNet Public Safety Advisory Committee. In addition Michael has a strong public safety background serving for over 35 years in the fire and emergency medical services, including 14 years as Fire Chief. In 2007 he was awarded the IAFC Volunteer Fire Chief of the Year.
