This discussion will provide an overview of the best management practices identified as the chief investigator of the USFA's manual FA-310/May 2007 titled "Recruitment & Retention for the Volunteer Emergency Services - Challenges and Solutions", and results of the Recruitment and Retention SAFER Grant project of the Firefighter's Assn. of the State of Pennsylvania.

BEYOND THE FIRELINE: Getting The Message Out - In most departments the need to interact with the media is regarded as a negative activity. If done properly, this can be a productive experience that informs the community and enhances the reputation of a department. This presentation will show how to build positive media relationships, describe the critical components of a useful media release and examine how to interact in a manner that conveys critical information. We will also examine why proper media relations can contribute to your recruitment and retention efforts.
