Lessons From the Field: A Collaborative Response to Address Increasing Methamphetamine Use in One Community

As stimulant use and related fatal overdoses rise, providing proven and effective treatment is critical to combat stimulant use disorder. Methamphetamine has become increasingly pure and dangerous resulting in more severe health problems for individuals who become addicted. Additionally, the regularity of fentanyl mixed into the stimulant supply has rapidly increased fatal overdoses in individuals with methamphetamine use disorders.

The session will discuss Sacramento County, California’s cross-system collaboration to better respond to increased methamphetamine use and overdose in its jurisdiction. Sacramento County will discuss lessons learned and successes they have had in implementing a robust methamphetamine coalition that works with the various specialty courts, the jail, and partners with treatment providers for reentry success to address methamphetamine use. Sacramento is also piloting a medication trial to treat methamphetamine use in the county. They will discuss challenges and data-supported successes.
