Lt. Ron Barerez grew up in South Florida. He joined the U.S. Army in 1991 serving as a combat medic. After attending college at Florida Atlantic University he was hired as a patrol officer by the City of North Lauderdale Police Department in 1999. The City of North Lauderdale Police Department merged with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office in 2001. Lt. Barerez has been assigned as a detective to Criminal Investigations, Street Crimes, and Selective Enforcement Units. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2007 and served as a supervisor on Road Patrol, the Tactical Deployment Team, the Selective Enforcement Team, the Street Crimes Unit, and the Gang Unit. In 2012, he was promoted to Lieutenant where he served on Road Patrol and later transferred to the Strategic Investigations Division. As a Lieutenant in the Strategic Investigations Unit, Lieutenant Barerez oversees the Broward County Drug Task Force, the Money Laundering Task Force, the Gang Unit, the Organized Crime Unit, and the Narcotics Interdiction Task Force, he has worked in this capacity for the past 10 years.
