Dr. Jon Zibbell, PhD. is a senior scientist in the Center for Behavioral Health Epidemiology, Implementation & Evaluation Research at RTI International where he conducts community-based epidemiological research on risk factors and health outcomes associated with illicit drug use. Dr. Zibbell is a behavioral scientist with 20+ years of field experience conducting mixed methods research with people who inject drugs (PWID). He is PI of several National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)-funded studies in Appalachia and the upper South where he investigates the illicit drug supply and its impact on overdose and infectious disease. Prior to RTI, Dr. Zibbell worked as a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) health scientist in the Division of Viral Hepatitis and the Injury Center conducting research on viral hepatitis, HIV infection, bacteria infections, and drug overdose. Dr. Zibbell was the lead qualitative investigator for CDC’s Scott County HIV outbreak investigation in 2015 and a member of the 2015 White House Heroin Task Force that developed the Obama Administration’s opioid response strategy. Dr. Zibbell was also on the 2015 CDC committee that developed HHS guidelines for federal funding of syringe service programs. Beyond research, Dr. Zibbell continues to assist states and community organizations in developing evidence-based approaches to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with injection drug use and new and emerging illicit drugs. Dr. Zibbell has published extensively in professional and aceademic journals and holds an adjunct appointment in the Department of Anthropology at Emory University.
