Given that more patients than ever present to dental offices with multiple medical conditions, often taking several medications in the effort to control them, the chances of a medical crisis event occuring in the office is greater than ever. Accordingly, it is important for the dental team to be prepared to prevent when possible, and recognize and respond when necessary in the event of a crisis event. However, the relative infrequency of such events often means that offices have not adequately prepared to perform at their best in such moments, particulalrly given the inherent stress and uncertainty of such moments. This lecture will consider how the team can prevent crisis events, how they mentally process and respond under challenging condition, and how they can best prepare to perfom optimally if and when a crisis event occurs.
Learning Objectives: 1. Explain that medical crisis events, while uncommon, can and do occur and can have serious long-term repercussions. 2. Identify how offices can work together to limit the chances of an adverse event occurring. 3. Establish effective office practice sessions to maximize their ability to respond in the event of a crisis event.
