It has been known for a very long time that patients with poor systemic health often have poor oral health. However, it is not always clear if this is because oral diseases and certain systemic diseases share similar risk factors, or if there is a true connection. The mouth is the gateway to the body, and the bacteria that live here are the gatekeepers. This presentation will focus on the link between oral health and systemic health as well as the connections between periodontitis and systemic diseases, with a view to identifying common microbial targets for therapeutic intervention as well as idiosyncratic features within this system.
Learning Objectives:
Recognize how oral health impacts systemic health
Understand how many systemic diseases can manifest in the oral cavity
Learn ways in which you can impact systemic health for your patient
