Electronic Nicotine Delivery System or e-cig is a battery-operated device that delivers a heated aerosol containing a mixture of nicotine, glycerol (and/or propylene glycol), and flavor with each puff. More than 20 million individuals (including 2.5 million high schoolers) are using this product. They are legal, touted in the media as safer than cigarettes, and claimed as smoking cessation aids. They also are popularly used in places where smoking is not permitted. This course will review the chemistry of the compounds in e-cigarette products, examine how these products impact oral health, and present recommendations to take into practice and share with patients.
