Control of acute dental pain requires the use of analgesics that offer the best efficacy and lowest probability of adverse outcomes. For opioids, this means targeting pain at the most appropriate time(s) in the postoperative period. Their usage also necessitates configuration of the drug regimen according to the scientific evidence for pain intensity and duration based on the type of procedure performed. Few opioids perform well in the dental setting; this program highlights these drugs from a scientific perspective.

Understand the scientific basis for assessing efficacy of various analgesic drugs for acute pain
Design appropriate prescriptions for the management of acute postoperative pain
