(POS18) SLPs and Schools Teams: Professional Development, Addressing Challenges, and Advocating for Change

This presentation addresses how SLPs can advocate for changes in school practice by working with various school teams. Ways to address caseload and special education eligibility, build teacher capacity through professional development, and opportunities to leverage SLP expertise on problem solving teams to improve outcomes will be discussed.

Identify the opportunities to provide professional development to increase teacher capacity and reduce inappropriate referrals
Describe ways SLPs can involve themselves in general education problem solving teams and activities to support students and reduce the number of students who are referred for special education
Analyze opportunities to participate in leadership teams and subsequent benefits to the SLP and school
