(POS09) Introducing "Problem Stories" to Promote Narrative Language Development in Early Childhood Classrooms
Over a four-month period, the SLP led a multicultural group of Head Start educators in developing skills to facilitate their student’s narrative language development. Qualitative and quantitative data show how the group adopted a philosophy of incorporating “problem stories” throughout their day and its impact on their classroom interactions.
Learning Outcomes:
You will be able to:
Explain how including “problem stories” in early childhood classrooms provides children with increased opportunities to develop narrative language skills.
Identify cultural variations in narrative style and how to mediate the presumed standard of the European North American style in early childhood settings.
Engage in proactive conversations with early childhood educators about adjusting classroom dialogue to include “problem stories” to promote narrative development.
