(POS23) The Cost of AAE-to-SAE Codeswitching

Speakers of African American English (AAE) are expected to use the Standard dialect of American English (SAE) in academic and professional settings. This requirement comes at a cost. This session will introduce clinicians to this hidden cost and help them navigate the competing values of identity and opportunity.

You will be able to:

Explain the difference between codeswitching on the one hand, and code-mixing/translanguaging on the other
Describe the hidden sociopsychological cost of AAE-to-SAE codeswitching for Black students
Outline strategies clinicians can use to help Black students navigate the mismatch between societal expectations of their communication and their lived experience of those.
