Board certified by American Board of Thoracic Surgery, American Board of Surgery and American Osteopathic Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is recognized in cardiothoracic surgery and a noted lecturer; he is an invited speaker at scientific conferences. A distinguished author, Dr Sutter has published numerous papers on cardiac surgery in peer-reviewed scientific journals and authored book chapters.
His clinical & academic interests include endoscopic minimally invasive robotic revascularization, off pump beating heart surgery, outcome analyses & quality efforts, the STS database and risk stratification. Dr Sutter’s interest in minimally invasive cardiac surgery procedures began as early as 1997–1998, long before he first used the daVinci Robot in 2005.
Fran is dedicated to teaching off pump ROBO-CAB; frequently hosting educational programs for surgical teams to observe live surgical cases for both off pump beating heart & robotic assisted CAB, introducing evidence-based protocols, including in-OR extubation. He specializes in the “Art of Coronary Revascularization” and welcomes surgeons & teams to visit. Contact: SutterF@mlhs.org
Dr Sutter, co-founding member & past President, Delaware Valley STS Quality Improvement Initiative; a regional effort group. He is a past President, Eastern Cardiothoracic Surgical Society.
On a personal note, in medical school, he was introduced to his current passion, rowing. He qualified as a finalist for Olympic Rowing Trials in 1976, was national double sculling champion in 1977 and was invited to the US Rowing team for World Championships in 1977 but declined due to his surgical residency. He maintains an active membership at Malta Boat Club on Schuylkill. Dr Sutter is FISA World champion in Masters Men’s Double in 2006. He enjoys surfing in Avalon, NJ where he was a lifeguard for many years during his youth.
