Dr. Hyung Joo Park is a chest wall deformity specialist with two decades of successful experience in pectus excavatum/carinatum repair surgery. He is currently a professor of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, College of Medicine, the Catholic University of Korea. He started chest wall surgery in 1999 as a pioneering surgeon on minimally invasive pectus excavatum repair (MIRPE). He presently dedicates himself solely to pectus deformity repair for excavatum, carinatum, and mixed malformations.
Dr. Park has been pursuing safer and easier pectus surgery for the past 20 years. The technology and devices he developed are Morphological Classifications of Pectus Excavatum; Techniques for Asymmetry; Technique and Devices for Bar Fixation; Crane Technique; New CT Indices for Pectus Excavatum; the Pectoscope; the Sandwich Technique for Pectus Carinatum Repair, the Bridge Technique; the Cross-Bar Technique. Recently, he has changed the paradigm of pectus surgery by creating the New Concepts: the “Column-Roof Principle” with the “Crane-Powered Approach” and the “Entire Chest Wall Remodeling.”
He served as the president of Chest Wall International Group (CWIG) from 2016 to 2018, and continues to serve CWIG in the Executive Committee. He successfully hosted CWIG Annual World Congress in Seoul, South Korea, in 2013 and 2018. He has been leading chest wall surgery in Korea and across the world for the past 20 years. He presented papers in over 60 international meetings. He hosted over 20 live surgery workshops for surgeons worldwide.
He is a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) and a member of the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery (EACTS), the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS), and the Korean Association of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (KATCVS).
