Dr. Clary is a native of Imperial County who graduated from the University of California at San Diego in 1987 with a degree in bioengineering. Dr. Clary received his medical degree from the University of California at San Francisco, completed general surgery residency training at Duke University and a fellowship in general surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Clary joined the faculty at Duke University in 2000 where he maintained a high volume practice in complex HPB oncology in addition to conducting translational research focusing on primary and metastatic liver malignancies. He served the department in a number of key roles including as program director for general surgery residency and surgical oncology/HPB fellowship programs, and as Vice-Chief of Surgical Oncology. Dr. Clary completed an executive MBA at the Duke Fuqua School of Business and in 2015 was recruited to the University of California at San Diego to serve as Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief for UC San Diego Health. In this capacity he leads over 130 full-time faculty in their efforts to provide the highest caliber of clinical care, to develop the next generation of academic and community surgeons, and to establish better options for tomorrow’s patients through transformative research. Dr. Clary serves the institution in many additional capacities including as co-Chair of the UC San Diego Health Finance Committee and as an executive board member for the UC San Diego Physician Group and UC San Diego Health. Dr. Clary is active nationally and internationally and has served as AHPBA Program Committee Chair and on its executive council for many years. Dr. Clary served as president of the Society for Clinical Surgery from 2018-2020 and is currently a member of the Editorial Board for the Annals of Surgery.
