Dr. Hari Nathan, MD, PhD, FACS, FSSO is an Associate Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery at the University of Michigan. Dr. Nathan completed both his undergraduate and medical education with honors at The Johns Hopkins University. He also completed advanced training in health services research and was awarded a PhD from The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Nathan completed his clinical residency training in general surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He subsequently completed a clinical fellowship in complex general surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He joined the faculty of the University of Michigan in 2014. Dr. Nathan's clinical focus includes the treatment of tumors of the liver, bile duct, pancreas, and stomach.
Dr. Nathan’s health services research portfolio focuses on variation in the cost and quality of surgical care. He was awarded a K08 career development award from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and has been a co-investigator on two R01 awards focused on evaluating the impact of Medicare payment policy innovations on surgical care. His more recent work focuses on understanding how hospital systems may leverage their unique strengths to improve the cost and quality of surgical care. In recognition of his work and future promise, he received the 2018 Joan L. and Julius H. Jacobson II Promising Investigator Award from the American College of Surgeons. In addition to his research pursuits, Dr. Nathan is the Director of the Michigan Value Collaborative, a coalition of hospitals and physician organizations that use data analytics and collaborative quality improvement to improve the value of healthcare in Michigan.
