Dr. Kiran Turaga is a surgical oncologist with a focus on the management of patients with oligometastatic disease and the applications of data for optimization of healthcare delivery. He is considered one of the leaders in the management of peritoneal surface and advanced malignancies.
Dr. Turaga completed his medical school at the AIIMS, Delhi followed by residency at Creighton University. He pursued his fellowship in surgical oncology at the Moffitt Cancer Center. At his first faculty position at the Medical College of Wisconsin, he was named the Sharon Wadina Endowed Professor and was awarded the Lee Biblo Award for Professional Excellence, awarded to one of two faculty.
In 2016, Dr. Turaga became the Vice Chief of the Section of General Surgery and Surgical Oncology at the University of Chicago. He is the program director for the CGSO fellowship. He leads a robust clinical and research program. The program focuses on early detection of disease with advancements in imaging and circulating DNA markers . He was awarded the Distinguished Faculty in Program Innovation and inducted as the Bucksbaum Senior Faculty Scholar.
Dr. Turaga also organized the Chicago Consensus Conference, a seminal meeting of thought leaders to create management algorithms for patients with peritoneal disease. He is currently the chair of the peritoneal disease site working group at the SSO.
Dr. Turaga currently has over 170 peer reviewed publications, and several book chapters and serves as the Associate Editor for the Annals of Surgical Oncology (GI section). He has mentored several residents, fellows and faculty, and has collaborated with several institutions across the country to help establish peritoneal disease programs. His research currently spans the Booth School of Business, the Center for Research Informatics and the Ludwig Center for Oligometastases. He lives in Chicago with his wife and two children.
