My academic focus and clinical expertise has centered on translational research to improve outcomes in patients with pancreas cancer. As the Chair of the Department of Surgery, Co-Director of the Wilmot Cancer Institute at the University of Rochester, and Surgeon-in-Chief at Strong Memorial Hospital, I strive to create a patient-centered, team-oriented and empowering environment that fosters both clinical/scientific excellence and innovation. My goal has always been to build a bench-to-bedside model of clinical investigation anchored in sound and rigorous science to bring novel and innovative therapies to patients with difficult-to-treat malignancies. My research interest is mechanisms of immunosuppression and inflammation in the tumor microenvironment, specifically, the biology of bone marrow-derived myeloid cells that infiltrate primary tumors and metastatic sites promoting tumor growth and dissemination. As the principal investigator of several, investigator- initiated, multi-modality trials in pancreas cancer, I have directly translated multiple laboratory findings into novel therapies and trained multiple graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and residents in clinical and basic research methodology. In addition, I am an expert in the surgical care of patients with complex hepatobiliary and pancreatic malignancies and I continue to manage a busy surgical practice. In the past 20 years, I have trained 10 undergraduates, 12 medical residents, 2 post-doctoral fellows, and 2 PhD student. I have mentored 1 post-doctoral fellow and 5 summer undergraduate research students.
