Charles R. Thomas, Jr., MD, is Professor and Chief, Radiation Oncology at the Dartmouth Cancer Center. He previously served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Radiation Medicine at OHSU. Dr. Thomas has received triple-board certification in Radiation Oncology (American Board of Radiology), Medical Oncology and Internal Medicine (American Board of Internal Medicine). He taught at the Vail Workshop from 2009-12, as well as the Flims/Zeist clinical trials workshop from 2012-2017. He is also active in protocol development either as chair or co-chair, within the U.S. cooperative group mechanism. He is currently Deputy Editor of JAMA Oncology and has served on the editorial boards of the Seminars in Radiation Oncology, Advances in Radiation Oncology, Journal of Clinical Oncology, and CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians. Dr. Thomas has served as an oral and written examiner for the GI section of The American Board of Radiology Certification Examination, as well as on multiple committees within ASCO (Grants Selection Committee, Membership Committee past-chair, Scientific Program Committee), RSNA (past chair, Radiation Oncology Study Section), and ASTRO (Nominating Committee, Science Council Steering Committee, Bylaws & Constitution Committee, Membership Committee, Scientific Program Committee & GI Abstract Review Committee). Dr. Thomas served as chair of the Grant Writing Workshop for the 2017-2020 annual ASCO meeting. He is the author or co-author of over 350 journal articles & editorials and is a co-editor of multiple textbooks including Oncologic Emergency Medicine: Principles & Practice (Springer, 2nd ed), Career Development in Academic Radiation Oncology (Springer, 2021), Mediastinal Tumors (Springer), Biliary Tract & Gallbladder Cancers: Diagnosis and Therapy (Springer, 2nd ed), and Esophagus Cancers: Practice and Principles (2009). Dr. Thomas has received funding from the NIH, NSF, foundations, and industry. In 2022, Dr. Thomas was a recipient of the inaugural Mentor Award from ASTRO.
