Alessandro Sammarco, DVM, PhD is a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr Sammarco graduated in veterinary medicine in 2014 at the University of Padua, Italy. He then started his PhD at the University of Padua, Italy, working on a project focused on mammary gland tumors of dogs, cats, and women. During his PhD, Dr Sammarco spent 1 year at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA, working on projects on glioblastoma, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer. In 2020, Dr Sammarco was awarded an American-Italian Cancer Foundation (AICF) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship that allowed him to work for one year in the laboratories of Dr Xandra O Breakefield and Dr Christian E Badr at the Massachusetts General Hospital on projects related to lipid metabolism in brain tumors. He then spent the second year of the AICF fellowship at UCLA in the laboratory of Dr Steven J Bensinger. At UCLA, Dr Sammarco studies the role of lipid metabolism in brain tumors and how manipulating lipid metabolism can reshape the function of immune cells.
