Dr. Mitra is currently an Assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of medicine and Children’s Hospital Colorado in the Division of hematology-oncology and bone marrow transplant. He was previously a Senior Scientist at the Stanford Institute for stem cell biology and regenerative medicine and the Ludwig center for cancer stem cell research and medicine. He originally hails from northern India where he completed his undergraduate and master's degrees from the basic medical sciences honors school program at Panjab University in Chandigarh, India [B.Sc (Honors) and M.Sc (Honors)]. In 1999 he joined the graduate program at the State University of New York at Buffalo where he completed a Ph.D. in Molecular Cell biology. He went on to do his postdoctoral training in developmental neurobiology at the center for neuroscience at the University of California, Davis, and then at the brain tumor research laboratories at Stanford University School of Medicine. In 2018 The Mitra laboratory moved to the University of Colorado, School of Medicine at Denver. A major goal within the laboratory is to understand the molecular physiology of immune cells within tumors and to identify mechanisms that define the biology of immune cell communities within brain tumors. The research interests primarily pertain to the immune-microenvironment of malignant brain tumors with a specific interest in overcoming immune evasion mechanisms in CNS malignancies.
