Dr. Paula Aristizabal is a hematologist-oncologist at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the University of California (UC) San Diego. She completed her fellowship in pediatric hematology/oncology and a Master of Advanced Studies in clinical research at UC San Diego.
Dr. Aristizabal research interests include bioethics, patient-navigation, and global health, with a focus on reducing pediatric cancer disparities by investigating social determinants of health and developing strategies to improve outcomes in racial/ethnic minorities and underserved children. She has conducted global health projects on implementation of health services for children with cancer in Latin America to improve access to care and cancer surveillance.
Dr. Aristizabal is the principal investigator of several clinical research studies focused on implementation science, mixed methods, bioethics, and quality improvement. She has received funding from the National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society, American Society of Hematology, and Alex Lemonade Stand Foundation. She is a member of the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center Population Sciences, Disparities and Community Engagement, the UC San Diego Dissemination and Implementation Science Center, and the UC San Diego Hispanic Center of Excellence.
In her division, Dr. Aristizabal is the Quality Improvement Lead and the Director of Rady Children's Hospital International Outreach Program since 2008. She is currently an advisor to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Alliance. She has received the National Cancer Institute Minority Spotlight recognition, the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinician-Educator award, the American Society of Hematology Scholar award, and the UC Office of the President "Team Science" Scholar award. She currently serves in the Curebound Foundation Scientific Advisory Board, the Pediatric Blood and Cancer journal Editorial Board, the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) Leukemia Disparities Committee, and in the COG Language Barriers Committee.
