Tin Fulton Walker and Owen, PLLC
S. Luke Largess is a partner at Tin Fulton Walker and Owen, PLLC. He has practiced law since 1990, primarily in the areas of civil rights and employment discrimination. Largess was counsel in the challenge to North Carolina’s constitutional ban on same sex marriages, leading to the court order on October 10, 2014 declaring a right to marriage equality in the state.
He now represents, along with the ACLU, Lonnie Billard, a long-time teacher at Charlotte Catholic High School who declared on Facebook shortly after the marriage equality decision that he was marrying his long-time partner. He was immediately banned from teaching at the high school He filed suit and won a ruling in 2021 that he was terminated/barred from teaching in violation of Title VII’s ban on sex discrimination in employment.
The Diocese has appealed that ruling, raising arguments to broaden the right of religious organizations to ignore federal employment laws. Largess will discuss the Billard case and its potential impact on the rights of LGBT employees of religious organizations.
