Prof.dr. Erik Danen is full Professor at the Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research, Leiden University, Leiden NL. He leads a group of ~10 scientists through funding from the Netherlands National Science Organization (NWO), EU, the Netherlands Cancer Society, and other organizations as well as joint programs with Biotech/ Pharma. He is Director of the Biopharmaceutical Sciences Program (~1000 students) at Leiden University, member of the steering board of the Dutch hDMT organ-on-chip institute, and Chair of the NWO Research community “Molecules, cells, and tissues”. After postdocs at NIH, Bethesda MD and the Netherlands Cancer Institute, Amsterdam NL, Danen moved to Leiden University where he is Professor of Cancer Drug Target Discovery since 2018. He develops 3D models combined with molecular genetic- and imaging approaches to study cellular interactions, signaling, and extracellular matix remodeling in the context of cancer and fibrosis. Identified mechanisms are further studied in animal models and clinically validated in patient cohorts. Public-private-partnerships have been established to promote application of discoveries and research tools. Current PPPs are in the areas of fibrosis and tumor immunology.
