The “Internet of Things” puts a vast amount of data at the doorstep of today’s laboratory, whose central purpose remains largely unchanged: delivering data that is accurate, repeatable, and compliant. We are at the foothills of a revolution in the way that everything from sample prep to data analysis is managed. ‘Managed’ is one way of putting it. More accurately, the lab will become more ‘connected’, and critical steps like sample prep will evolve from being a collection of disparate processes to a full traceable workflow that can be set up and executed remotely and easily shared with other labs, increasing repeatability and analyst productivity.
