Bacteria and yeast play a critical role in industry in several ways that exploit their natural capabilities. They are used in manufacture of foods, the production of antibiotics, probiotics, drugs, vaccines, starter cultures, insecticides, enzymes, fuels and solvents. Microplate based screening and experimentation offers the ability to measure large numbers of samples of multiple experimental conditions rapidly and simultaneously. Here we describe the quantitation of bacterial and yeast cell growth under various growth conditions using a dedicated 4-plate microplate reader to make absorbance determinations at 600 nm. We describe the use of the LogPhase 600 Microbiology Growth reader to provide temperature control, solution agitation, and monitor bacterial growth using light scatter in 96-well microplates.
