In this work, we concentrate on borane chemistry to yield an organo-borane terminated diamond that is highly reactive for further chemical modification. Surface modification of diamond surfaces are challenging due to being chemical inert, sterically hindered and atomic surface density (22 atoms/nm2 on 110 surface). We screened a library of trigonal planar boranes (ie. Alkyl boranes, boron trihalides, phenyl borates, etc.) with FND-OH at room temperature using wet chemistry under inert and water-free conditions. For example, we found the precursors BBr3 and BCl3 were highly reactive with the FND-OH surface and surprisingly we found sheet-like structures on the surface of FND-BBr2 with SEM imaging. Surface sensitive spectroscopies (DRIFTS, XAS, XPS) were used to probe the molecular and atomic structure of the FND constructs’ surface after borane chemistry; chemical stability of FND-Br2 was performed with temperature programed desorption DRIFTS from 25C to 600C. Our findings suggest that chemical reactivity of borane precursors is a function of the -R group; reactivity is greatest with trihalides and least with alkoxys. In the future we plan to exploit the trigonal planar geometry of the organoboranes for decoration of stabilizing and bioreactive species.
