The World Health Organization categories burnout as a psychological syndrome from chronic work-related stress that is unmanaged. Surveys have repeatedly shown widespread burnout of breast radiologists. Burnout of other health care workers has been demonstrated in multiple studies. For practice leaders to help their teams transition from burnout to wellness, a long term approach will be needed. This will include rigorously defining burnout and wellness, committed leadership, adopting a model of professional fulfillment, fostering a culture of wellness, improving operational efficiency, and optimizing resiliency.
