Practice Innovations
Fiscal year (FY) 2019, 34 pressure injuries and fiscal year 2020, 35 pressure injuries sustained in a rural Midwest hospital. Implementing standardized assessment days and standard has decreased pressure injuries to 21 total injuries with 3 serious safety events. FY 2022, zero serious safety events and 9 total pressure injuries. Multiple hospital units have gone over 1000 days without serious safety event. Ongoing assessment and teamwork will continue to decrease hospital acquired injuries and stop serious safety events.
Discussion:
Success has come with patient care tech involvement in prevention efforts. Focused education on skin assessment and areas of high concern for break has enhanced the patient experience. Teamwork for two person assessment days have decreased patient apprehension with continuous assessment.
