A pressure injury is “inside-out” if it starts from inside the body. By looking at angiosomes, or tissue-units with their own vascular supplies, some of these special pressure injuries can be explained. Even better: angiosomes may tell us the essential nature of these injuries. This session will touch on a phenomenon that remains little understood.
Learning Objectives:
Explain the “inside-out” etiology of severe pressure injuries resulting from vascular infarction
Discuss the anatomical distribution of tissue perfusion via "angiosomes"
Discuss the concept of ischemia reperfusion injury in relation to Stage 1 pressure injuries
