Monique Lisa Abner attended Dartmouth College and then obtained her medical degree from Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in Hershey, PA. She then completed her General Surgery training at The Ohio State University, Plastic and Reconstructive training at Wright State University, and an Orthopedic Hand Surgery Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Combined Hand Surgery Program. In 1997, she moved to Charlotte North Carolina and became the first African- American Board-certified Plastic Surgeon in solo practice. She held leadership positions on numerous committees as well as presided as Chair of the Department of Surgery, and Section Chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery.
Dr. Abner pursued and achieved certification in Hyperbaric Medicine, and certification by the American Board of Wound Management. For the past eight years, she has focused her attention on wound care and hyperbaric medicine with a passion for education and empowerment. While serving as medical director of Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine in Hagerstown, Maryland, she created educational videos and songs, and designed the Abner Wheel of Healing which serves as a teaching model for the collaborative basis of wound care management. She is a contributing writer for Today’ Wound Clinic, and serves on the editorial board for the Wound Care Learning Network.
She is a lifetime member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery, member of the American Board of Wound Management, member of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society, and member of the Association for the Advancement of Wound Care.
Dr. Abner has served on the speaker’s bureau for Urgo North America, LLC.
Dr. Abner has been a competitive ballroom dancer, and is an avid graphic artist.
