Marc R. Matthews is board certified in general surgery and surgical critical care by the American Board of Surgeons as well as National Board of Physicians and Surgeons and has been in medical practice for over 20 years. He finished his general surgery residency at Maricopa Medical Center (now Valleywise Health Medical Center) in Phoenix, Arizona. He then went on to complete a trauma, critical care and burn fellowship at University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California.
He is an associate clinical professor at the University of Arizona, Creighton University, Midwestern University and AT Still Schools of Medicine where he is active in medical student, intern, resident, and fellow education. He has published over 80 papers in burns, trauma and surgical diseases as well as having given many national and international presentations. He is an editor/reviewer for multiple journals and has authored several book chapters.
Dr. Matthews has deployed with the United States Air Force as a combat surgeon to Bagram Air Field’s Craig Joint Theater Hospital in Afghanistan. Dr. Matthews volunteered to deploy with the 102nd Forward Surgical Team in the Kunar / Korengal Valleys along the Afghanistan / Pakistan border to assist with trauma and burn surgery, combat casualty care and humanitarian general surgery cases. He has also deployed to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany to support the medical evacuation and care of critically injured United States servicemen and women from Iraq (OIF) and Afghanistan (OEF) prior to their return to the continental United States. He is now retired from the United States Air Force with an honorable discharge.
A native of California, Dr. Matthews graduated from University of California, Los Angeles with a Bachelor of Science, Baylor University with two Master's degrees, and received his Medical Degree from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine.
