This poster covers Origami Solar's work developing a steel frame for PV modules. Steel frames can lower module cost, reduce GHG emissions, enable regional supply chains, and enable innovative design features for mounting and extreme environments. Our initial testing shows that a steel frame performs significantly better than an aluminum frame in UL and IEC static load testing. A third-party LCA firm found that our steel frames reduce GHG emissions by 87% compared to traditional aluminum frames. Module manufacturers, EPCs, and racking companies in the solar industry will benefit from the information presented here.
