Matthew Henke, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the University of Illinois Chicago. I completed my PhD work with Neil Kelleher at Northwestern University using mass spectrometry to investigate fungal natural product biosynthesis. For my postdoc, I worked with Jon Clardy at Harvard Medical School to identify inflammatory molecules produced by a member of the gut microbiota that is associated with inflammatory bowel disease. In the Henke lab, we are looking for the molecules that human-associated microbes produce that drive human health and disease. We use mass spectrometry, natural products chemistry, microbiology, and cell and animal models to find bioactive molecules produced by our symbiotic microbes. Our main areas of focus are inflammatory bowel disease, microbial competition and host homeostasis.
