Paul L. Walsh, PhD is a Director of Synthetic Molecule Analytical Development in the Analytical R&D division of Merck & Co., Inc. Paul received his BS in Chemistry from the University of Mary Washington majoring in Chemistry and getting his first taste of research performing photochemical and electrochemical experiments and graduated Magna Cum Laude while also completing an Honors Thesis on his research. He then traveled south to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he spent his years in graduate school rooting for the Tar Heels basketball program and earning his PhD under the direction of Professor Mark Wightman. Upon graduating, Paul started his career in Pharmaceutical Development at Merck in a Discovery Pharmaceutics group working on research investigating amorphous dispersions and sustained release dosage forms in preclinical species and ensuring developability of new chemical entitires. After transferring to Analytical R&D, Paul has taken on increasing roles of responsibility leading small groups and cross functional teams and eventually became a people manager developing his skills in leading people, and continuing to learn drug substance and product analytical development and is now leading a team working on synthetic portions of bioconjugates and interfacing with partners in biologics development.
