Dr. Paul Shapiro is a professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy and has been on the faculty since 1999. He received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1987, and his doctorate in molecular physiology from the University of Vermont in 1995. Dr. Shapiro completed post-doctoral training from 1995-1999 in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Colorado-Boulder. His research focuses on intracellular signal transduction and the role that dysregulation of protein kinases plays in the pathology and progression of proliferative diseases. Specific areas of research focus on the discovery and development of novel small molecules that selectively inhibit functions of the extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERK1/2) and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases and their advancement towards clinical testing for the treatment of cancer and inflammatory disease.
