Dr. Oliver Yoa-Pu Hu is a Distinguished Chair Professor of Taipei Medical University, Honorable Professor of National Defense Medical Center, Distinguished Visiting Chair of IBMS, Academia Sinica, Fellow of USA National Academy of Inventors and Fellow of American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists.He received his PhD from the University of Florida in 1984. Dr. Hu was appointed as a visiting professor of Johns Hopkins University; Chair Professor of Fu Jen Catholic University; Adjunct Professor of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and National Taiwan University.
Prof. Hu has been granted 88 international patents. He is also the author of over 160 original research articles. In 2017,a novel non-addictive, for up to 7 days analgesic for severe pain has been approved. Phase III trials have been completed for new drugs, hepatotoxicity-free acetaminophen, anti-TB and antidote for acetaminophen intoxication from Prof. Hu’s inventions. A novel Galactose Single Point (GSP) method and kits, which can quantitatively determine liver function has been listed in the US FDA Guidance for Industry, as well as in several international textbooks.
Prof. Hu was appointed as the Director-General of the Taiwan Bureau of the Pharmaceutical Affairs for four years. He successfully implemented 132 new regulations, including two new laws: the Drug Injury Relief Law and the Rare Disease Prevention, Treatment and Orphan Drug Act. Additionally, he established two Foundations, the Center for Drug Evaluation (CDE) and the Taiwan Drug Injury Relief Foundation, to facilitate drug approval and drug injury relief systems in Taiwan. He has laid the foundations for the modernization of pharmaceutical regulations. Prof. Hu also served as the consultant at Center of Pharmacovigilance, WHO. As a result of his outstanding accomplishments, Prof. Hu was nominated by the President of Taiwan, ROC and with over 90% approval rate by Taiwan Congressman as the Minister without Portfolio for 6 years.
