While biopharmaceutical companies have made tremendous advances, patients still struggle to adhere with their medication regimens and are challenged with medication access. In addition, daily pills do not deliver medicine in a pharmacologically optimized way. These barriers are particularly challenging when dealing with global health issues like malaria, safe contraception, and HIV prevention and treatment. An emerging new delivery platform may change all that by delivering long-acting oral therapies to optimize medication delivery and health outcomes, and potentially even enable the eradication of malaria. This presentation will review adherence challenges, shortcomings of the tried and true daily pills that are ubiquitous, and describe an innovative approach to drug delivery that addresses these challenges. The technology innovations required to make this a reality will be discussed.
