Eighty percent of US adults are not meeting the government’s physical activity recommendations for aerobic activity and muscle strengthening¹. One in ten premature deaths could be prevented by getting enough physical activity², yet physical activity is insufficiently discussed with patients and is rarely used as a preventative or treatment modality in clinical practice. In this presentation, we will review the health risks of sedentary behavior and the health benefits of regular physical activity, including the mechanisms of action of physical activity on organ systems and specific medical conditions. We will review how to take a thorough physical activity history and how to implement individualized physical activity prescriptions.
