Complications are the nemesis of many who would want to be more successful with surgical extractions. Many complications are preventable. One way to prevent them is not to treat patients if the proposed treatment appears outside the dentists' range of knowledge, experience, and comfort. Once a patient is accepted for treatment, there is the obligation to proceed according to established principles and standards of care which includes managing problems should they happen. These standards are the same for specialists as well as generalists. They include the use of proper techniques, favorable outcomes, and reasonable durations for the procedure.
Learning Objectives:
Select cases within your capability and refer those that appear too difficult.
Know the main factors which tend to make some extractions more difficult than others.
Treat the main complications that can occur DURING a surgical extraction.
Manage the main complications that can occur postoperatively.
