After graduating in 1981 from Oregon Health and Sciences University, Dr. Tidwell opened a dental practice in Forest Grove, Oregon. Dr. Tidwell “hung out his shingle“ and started a solo practice. When he started he did not know a person in the area. He practiced dentistry in the same town for 40 years. His only move was into a larger building that he built specifically for his needs. He holds dental licenses in Oregon and Idaho, and continues a private practice in Idaho today.
During his training in cosmetic dentistry, Dr. Tidwell recognized the issues surrounding amalgam and composite restorations of that era. For that reason, he began intensive personal education and hands on training in the skill of gold inlay and gold onlay restorations. His practice centers around placing gold restorations even today.
With the advent and excitement surrounding dental implants, Dr. Tidwell launched into the field. He received a certificate as a Diplomate in the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. Placing dental implants remains a large part of his practice. With the support and help of a fellow dentist he co-founded the Oregon Dental Implant Placement Study Club, with an emphasis on the participants physically placing implants under direct mentorship.
Dr. Tidwell is an expert consultant. He helps attorneys defend dentists. He reviews cases to assess risk management issues and consults with professional insurance investigators. He has been involved in this work for the last 10 years. Heavily involved in arbitrations, depositions, and open trials he is called on regularly to give expert testimony to defend dentists. He has also worked with state boards as a mentor and assists attorneys in resolving clinical issues that are presented to the board for review.
