Barbara-Jo Achuff, MD FAAP is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital with an overarching career goal to improve early and late outcomes for children with cardiac disease. As an attending in the pediatric cardiac ICU, her primary focus is on sedation and pain management practices for children with heart disease and those after heart surgery. Barbara-Jo completed training in pediatric critical care and an advanced fellowship instructional year in cardiac critical care at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia with work applied to medication and treatment options and their effect on early outcomes after cardiac surgery. As the director for a multi-disciplinary sedation stewardship team in the CICU at Texas Children’s, Barbara-Jo has developed an expanding, daily refreshed platform with interactive dashboards including all medications administered to CICU patients. Through novel data discovery, pattern recognition and visualizations of large amount of data over time, age-based analgesia/sedation pathways and metrics to sustain those pathways have been developed and implemented at TCH. With current, accurate and timely clinical reports at the point of care and data-driven decision making, her team continues to lead scientific processes and analytics. This allows the ICU team to leverage data for quality improvement and excellent care at the bedside for the most fragile patients in the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit.
