Dr. Patricia Hickey is known internationally for her work in leadership development, care delivery innovation, patient safety, and bridging nursing practice and health policy. Her program of research examines the nursing and organizational factors associated with pediatric patient outcomes and the health of the work environment. Notably Dr. Hickey was the first nurse scientist to document the impact of nurse certification on pediatric patient outcomes and she is also widely recognized for her role in establishing the Nurse Education and Support Team which offers just in time support for nurses encountering moral and ethically challenges. Dr. Hickey has disseminated cutting edge nursing knowledge in more than 100 publications and multiple presentations at national and international symposia.
Dr. Hickey is the recipient of several awards and honors: 2009 American Association of Critical Care Nurses Circle of Excellence Award, 2009 Inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, 2011 Distinguished Alumna Award from the University of Massachusetts, 2013 United States’ President’s Gold Volunteer Service Award, 2015 Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Society established first named lecture in pediatric nursing, the biennial Patricia A. Hickey Leadership Lecture, and the 2019 Distinguished Nurse Researcher Award from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.
Dr. Hickey’s goals are to 1. provide leadership for this world-class team and to make significant contributions to the care of acute and critically ill children, 2. empower new staff, emerging leaders, and scientists as they advance the science of professional practice and 3. to optimize the health of the professional practice environment through authentic leadership, caring practices and innovative care delivery.
